source: wikipedia Albinism Prejudices and beliefs about albinism Persecution of albinos in Africa People with albinism are still victims of exclusion, persecution, and even murder or ritual crime (in the latter case, the victims sometimes even being abducted) for magical purposes (local beliefs attributing healing powers to the organs of albinos) especially in Mali, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and Tanzania. In Mozambique alone, a hundred attacks took place between 2014 and 2017. In a report published in June 2016, the Canadian NGO Under The Same Sun lists 457 attacks, including 178 murders, committed in recent years against albinos in 26 African countries. The most frequently cited countries are Tanzania, with 161 attacks, the Democratic Republic of Congo (61), Burundi (38) Malawi (28) and Côte d'Ivoire (26). Beliefs These problems are due to the persistence of legends conferring mystical characteristics on people with albinism. Some indicate that albinos do not die but disappear, that they see in the night, that they have red eyes, poor intelligence and abnormal development. But also albinism is a bad spell cast by the gods or by ancestors. Therefore, being in contact with a living albino can lead to illness, bad luck, and even death. The waganga believe that the hair, bones, genitals, or thumbs of people with albinism have magical powers known to inflate a fishing net, reveal the presence of gold in land, or win votes for a politician. Mamadou Sissoko, secretary general of the Federation of Associations with Albinism in West Africa (Fapao) affirms that “every time there are elections, we become game for people who want to make ritual sacrifices. Isaac Mwaura, Kenya's first albino MP, recalls the false belief that an HIV-positive person can be cured of AIDS by having sex with an albino. Origin In the past, albinos were eliminated from birth in some tribes. According to Célestin Wagoum, historian and anthropologist, from the Omar Bongo University in Libreville, Gabon, “these beliefs are very old since in Black Africa, within the black population, it is inconceivable that we find human beings. another color, especially when both parents are black. It is a phenomenon that has aroused a lot of curiosity among Africans. This is why in our cultures the person with albinism is at the same time feared, respected or deified according to the cultures (…) Albinos are considered as beings endowed with magical powers. Some politicians, businessmen or churches, think that by committing ritual crimes, or by using the hair or nails of these albinos, they will be able to increase their political aura or to have many faithful in their church…. Fermer
